Fire Chief Michael J. Benson was appointed as Copley Township’s sixth Fire Chief in August, 2007, and he is a 28 year veteran of the fire service. Prior to being appointed as Chief, he served as a volunteer firefighter, company officer and fire instructor for the Uniontown and Barberton Fire Departments, and the University of Akron.
Chief Benson has a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Anna Maria College, is certified as an Executive Fire Officer from the National Fire Academy, and he earned Bachelor's and Associates Degrees in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology and Fire Science from the University of Cincinnati. He is also a certified Fire Officer IV, Firefighter II, Fire Instructor, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator and Paramedic.

Chief Benson also managed the creation of the Southwest Summit Council of Governments (SWSCOG), a historical partnership between the Cities of Barberton and Norton, and Copley Township. SWSCOG oversees the award winning Southwest Summit Communications (SWSCOM) emergency dispatch center and shared Information Technology Service (SWSCOM-IT). He has authored grants resulting in more than five million dollars for projects in Copley Township and neighboring communities.
A lifelong resident of Northeast Ohio, Chief Benson currently resides in Wadsworth with his wife and three children.
